Nortel patents sold for $ 4.5 billion

A consortium consisting of Apple, EMC, Microsoft, Research In Motion, Sony and Ericsson has won a tender for the purchase of more than 6,000 patents and patent applications of the bankrupt Canadian company Nortel Networks. As part of this transaction the companies will pay $ 4.5 billion, DailyComm reports.
Nortel Networks, one of the world’s major telecommunications equipment manufacturers is now undergoing bankruptcy proceedings. Most of the physical assets of Nortel have already been sold and Nortel’s portfolio of patents was put up on the last auction. The portfolio comprises a wide range of wireless technologies (e.g. wireless video, Wi-Fi, Internet search) or just penetrating (including LTE) widely used in today’s smartphones.
