The World Summit on Information SocietyThe World Summit on Information Society arranged by UN and International Telecommunications Union held in Tunis was significant event. 176 country leaders, more then 11 thousands representatives of 50 different UN structures, hundreds of NGOs, the biggest World Organizations and noble Media agencies participated in the first part of the Summit which took place in Geneva, Sweden on December 10-12, 2003. As a next part of this event the World Summit on the Information Society managed by heads of UN and State leaders took place in Tunis on November 16-18. The General Secretary of UN Kofi Annan also took part in this highly-organized event. Azerbaijan showed big activity in this Summit. Our country was presented with the leader of Azeri delegation the Minister of Communications and Information Ali Abbasov, public sector, international organizations, NGOs, private sector and 67 members of Mass Media. Our representatives showed big interest and excelled in their activities in more than 100 events. It’s necessary to add that Azerbaijan was sponsor of Tunis Summit and member of organizing committee. As a private sector Delta Telecom and AzerSat enterprises presented their projects. The technical director of the company Rahid Alekberli addressed on projects concerning e-government, he showed the progresses and attainments made in Azerbaijan: National Internet Backbone, the first Internet and unique Backbone, the develop of state communications, giving in use TETRA network also DIRECWAY, created to formate universal network anywhere; high organization of local Internet Exchange, the construction of EWSD-- station the base for the biggest Telephone network and other successful projects proving that Azerbaijan has great achievements in field of communication .Big interest was shown to projects that were accomplished with help of new technology. Delta Telecom and AzerSat companies do not stop on reached and will continue to enrich the network of our Republic with a new technology.
